Jan. 3, 2011
On January 3rd 2011, Bruce Baikie, Founder of Green WiFi, traveled to Haiti for a site survey trip with a team of students and their professor from Illinois Institute of Technology. The goal of this trip was to collect specific technical data on One Laptop per Child (OLPC) pilot schools in Lascahobas that will enable a solar installation to take place in May 2011. Baikie has been mentoring the IIT students on the design of a replicable, open-source, Direct Current - only solar solution to charge the XO laptops at these pilot schools; a solution that can be employed across Haiti and in other countries, such as Rwanda. The project is a partnered effort involving Green Wi-Fi, OLPC Haiti, the IPRO class at IIT, the XO Dock team at SJSU, and students at the State University of Haiti.
On the final day of the trip, the team met with the Haitian Minister of Primary Education in Port-au-Prince, who was very positive about this endeavor, and acknowledged the great need for these types of partnering and capacity-building education projects in Haiti. |
