Project: Haiti OLPC - 2009/2010   « Back

Green WiFi with collaboration with the Student Chapter of Engineers without Borders at Illinois Institute of Technology, specifically Dr. Laura Hosman, are working on an implementation plan to help the OLPC rollout in Haiti in 2010. The Haitian government has purchased 13,200 OPLC XO laptops.

Bruce Baikie, Founder Green WiFi, will be traveling to Haiti Novemebr 23, 2009 for meetings with Guy Serge Pompilus, OLPC Director for the Ministry of Education. The focus will be OPLC XO roll out into schools that lack electric power and internet connections. There is an estimated 258 primary school that will need an alternative energy source to power the OXs. Mr. Baikie will also tour a existing OLPC based school and schools lacking electric power.

The trip will also set in plan the goal of training 60 engineering students from local Haitian universities in solar and WiFi internet connections. Green WiFi is seeking funding ($102K USD) for this training and a small start up fund to incubate 10 students into a small business to help install and maintain the solar and wifi internet connections long term.
