Illinois IT Group Outfits School with Library and Solar Power to Charge 500 Laptops   « Back

LASCAHOBAS, Haiti (defend.ht) - The Basic Application School and Educational Support Center in Lascahobas is now equipped to charge 500 One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) model laptops using solar power.

According to Laura Hosman and Assistant Professor of Political Science at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), this installation is the largest single-school solar laptop charging deployment.

Hosman writes that her team in Haiti were also able to set up a library at the school with French and Creole books with an inventory catalog to allow students and teachers to check them out at the start of the school year.

The group from IIT put in nearly a years worth of planning, raised $25,000 and set up the system, the library and training for maintaining both in just 8 days.

The team consisted of Professor Laura Hosman, Bruce Baikie from Green Wifi, 7 students from IIT, Dhara Shah, Jacob Ernst, Mario Berrones, Regine Antenor, Ryan Tillman, Simon Brauer, & Stevie Brummer, Fabrice Urrizalqui from the French-American School in San Francisco, and Guy Serge Pompilus, Director of OLPC-Haiti.

Local support was given by Adam Holt of the OLPC headquarter in Haiti, Carl Friedrich Lacrete, an engineering student at the State University of Haiti, and 4 members of Haiti Outreach in La Victoire, Haiti.
